A bag of marbles un sac de billes is based on the best selling autobiographical novel by joseph joffo but here we aren t treated to the bleak battlefield often shown with such subject matter. The english translation of the title is bag of marbles which doesn t have the same ring but had to be kept because of the symbolism. I hope that young readers will be introduced to this important book. No one would describe this book as a thriller but it has false identities and escapes through the forest in the dark of night.

However the language and descriptive passages of the original presentation is preferable. Instead by following the journey of inseparable brothers joseph and maurice we see 1940s france through the innocent eyes of a child. Ten year old joseph even looks a bit like tintin with his skinny frame and blond hair. The story is regaining popularity now because a new film adaptation was released earlier this year.

For a brief portion of the war he spends his days eating pastries and watching the same movie over and over again. Imagine it is 1940 and you live in paris france and you are a young boy who loves to play marbles with his friends.
